Chapter 2114: Decided to Go
For a long while, Jia Heming remained silent.
“Lord, I still believe it’s too risky! Regardless of Ah-Ye and the others’ prowess, we’d be on hostile turf. Both General Sun and Prefect Liu harbor animosity toward us. I fear they won’t extend courtesies when push comes to shove. If conflict erupts, wouldn’t it be…”
“Anze Province can’t afford to lose you! Without you, it would fall apart. If anyone should go, let it be me.”
Shao Yunduan chuckled softly. “I won’t mince words with them; I’ll just play it by ear. Qi still holds sway in the Northwest Army, and he wouldn’t dare harm me unless he’s lost his senses. But you, you’re in a different position. It could end badly for you. Besides, Sun Pu may not be inclined to have a civil conversation with you.”
They had their differences from the outset, and as for Prefect Liu, negotiation wasn’t even an option.
Shao Yunduan had to leverage his Qi identity to assert dominance.
Jia Heming was left speechless.
Shao Yunduan spoke the truth. Sun Pu hadn’t even spared him a second thought, and even if he had, it would’ve been out of fear rather than respect. He wouldn’t treat Jia Heming kindly.
Perhaps it would spell his demise if he ventured there.
After a moment of silence, Jia Heming sighed and conceded, “I’m inept in such matters and can’t share your burden, Lord. Your safety is paramount. If things escalate, finding a means of escape is crucial…”
Shao Yunduan nodded with a smile. “I’m aware. Rest assured, I entrust Anze Province to you.”
“Lord, have no fear. I’ll ensure Sun Meng and his cohorts don’t budge an inch.”
Thankfully, Constable Li’s injury rendered him immobile. Otherwise, dealing with that obstinate and shrewd individual would’ve been no easy task.
Shao Yunduan went over some details with him, finalizing business matters. He summoned Sun Bai, Sun Qian, and Zheng Sangge to discuss arrangements.
By the time they returned to the office, dinner was already served.
Qiao Xuan had instructed the kitchen to prepare a meal.
Gathered around the table, bathed in warm light, the family shared a cozy meal together.
Fresh, delicious food had a way of lifting spirits.
After dinner, Shao Yunduan reviewed Anan’s homework while they engaged in light conversation. Anan then headed for a shower and bed, leaving Shao Yunduan and Qiao Xuan alone.
“Wife, tomorrow at dawn, I embark on a journey to the provincial city.”
Qiao Xuan’s expression shifted. “Must you go?”
Shao Yunduan nodded, planting a kiss on her cheek before speaking with a gentle smile, “Sun Meng’s demands are excessive, but reasoning with that fool is futile. I must personally speak with Sun Pu. Deputy Prefect Jia will attempt to detain Sun Meng and his cohorts in Anze Province, and if Sun Meng insists on seeing me, you’ll inform him that I’m indisposed…”
Qiao Xuan listened in silence, though she absorbed little of his words, and truthfully, she didn’t want to. They held little significance for her.
All she grasped was that Shao Yunduan was heading to the provincial city.
Given the circumstances, the trip was unavoidable.
Qiao Xuan’s mind felt hollow, a tinge of panic and confusion creeping in.
“I can’t just let you go alone… Can I? Then I’ll accompany you! Deputy Prefect Jia can handle Sun Meng. Let’s leave early and return promptly. It’ll only be a few days. Deputy Prefect Jia is more than capable!”
“Wife,” Shao Yunduan interjected, placing his hands on her shoulders and meeting her gaze. “Deputy Prefect Jia won’t suffice. Sun Meng is obstinate. He wouldn’t dare lay a hand on the Prefect’s wife, but he won’t hesitate with the Deputy Prefect.”
