Chapter 2115: Worry

“Besides, how could I take you along?” Shao Yunduan countered.

How could he subject her to such peril?

“But…”

“I give you my word, I’ll return unharmed. The presence of the Northwest Army, along with Qi, remains unknown to them. I can leverage that uncertainty to deter any rash actions.”

If he couldn’t afford to take risks, he’d naturally be cautious, thus disinclined to harm him.

Shao Yunduan smiled reassuringly. “Ah-Ye is highly skilled in martial arts, and Zheng Sangge is seasoned. Do you still doubt my safety?”

Of course, she fretted!

But Qiao Xuan couldn’t voice her concerns, fearing Shao Yunduan would balk at the risk.

“And Anan.” Shao Yunduan’s tone softened even further. “Stay here with Anan, alright? We wouldn’t rest easy if someone else looked after him.”

Qiao Xuan parted her lips, but no words emerged.

“Then, take care. Your life outweighs everything else. Only by staying alive can we overcome any obstacle…”

As long as he drew breath, there was hope.

If need be, she’d fight her way through to save him.

With action, all things were possible.

Shao Yunduan couldn’t help but chuckle, touched by her concern. “It won’t come to that, my dear. The Sun Family isn’t that foolish!”

What purpose would killing him serve? What could they possibly gain? If they dared harm him, Qi wouldn’t rest until justice was served. And he wouldn’t provoke them needlessly.

He was confident he’d return unscathed.

After much cajoling and reassurance, Shao Yunduan finally managed to soothe Qiao Xuan’s nerves.

Initially overwhelmed by the news of his impending journey, Qiao Xuan had been at a loss. Now, however, she felt a semblance of calm, finding solace in his words…

“Given our early departure tomorrow, let’s retire for the night.”

Shao Yunduan breathed a sigh of relief, nodding with a smile. “Agreed!”

As they prepared to retire, Shao Yunduan moved to embrace her, leaning in for a kiss. He had something else in mind.

Yet, before their lips could meet, a knock sounded at the door. “Lord, Madam, Constable Hang is here. He claims it’s urgent.”

Hang Xingshan, along with Sun Bai, Sun Qian, and others, had been actively involved in city patrols and defense. His unexpected visit at this hour likely bore significance to their current predicament.

Unless it was a matter of murder, it was unusual for them to seek him out at such a late hour. It had to be related to Sun Meng and his entourage.

With urgency pressing, Shao Yunduan swiftly departed, leaving Qiao Xuan behind.

Yet, Qiao Xuan was undeterred. Retrieving one of Shao Yunduan’s robes from the wardrobe, she donned it and tied up her hair, declaring without raising her gaze, “I’m coming with you.”

Knowing her resolve was unyielding, Shao Yunduan simply took her hand. “Let’s go.”

As they stepped out, Hang Xingshan, neck craned anxiously, called out, “Lord!”

Indeed, trouble brewed, and the instigator was none other than Sun Meng himself.

Shao Yunduan sighed, his head pounding. “We’ll discuss en route!”

Boarding the carriage, the coachman hastened toward the site of the disturbance. Ah-Ye accompanied them, leading over twenty elite guards on horseback.

In less than ten minutes, they reached the scene.

Even before alighting from the carriage, Shao Yunduan and Qiao Xuan heard Sun Meng’s furious shouts, a woman’s irate complaints, a girl’s sobs, and the murmurs of the crowd.
