When the Doctor Uses A Hack
Chapter 494: Reminiscing the Eventful and Dense YearsBy now, the time had reached midnight!
In the deep autumn of Anyang, the chill had set in.
Yet, a group of people emerged from the Provincial Second Hospital, their spirits high.
Tang Jinbo and Chen Cang walked together, talking and laughing, their hands constantly sketching a blueprint for the future, recounting tales of past struggles.
Most of the hospital leaders had left, leaving only Qin Xiaoyuan, Li Jianwei, and Li Baoshan behind.
Tomorrow was Saturday, and no one would be working.
On a whim, Qin Xiaoyuan suddenly said, “Professor Tang has come from afar, how about we head to the night market for some food and drink? Anyang’s night market is quite a feature too, gathering flavors from all directions. On this land of Anyang, they’re crushed and blended, creating a unique taste!”
Tang Jinbo smiled, “Then I’ll have to trouble Director Qin.”
The group arrived at the night market, dressed in suits and leather shoes, but each took a seat on little stools.
Before long, the table was filled with food!Li Jianwei looked at Li Baoshan with narrowed eyes and a smile, “Baoshan…”
Li Baoshan, realizing his role, stood up and said, “You guys wait, I’ll go get some drinks.”
He then quickly walked toward his home.
Everyone laughed.
Whenever Qin Xiaoyuan and the others went out to eat with Li Baoshan, they never had to bring drinks or buy them. After all… Director Li’s home was stocked with plenty of alcohol.
Logic would say, could they, as hospital directors, ever be short on alcohol?
Of course not, but they all enjoyed a drink or two!
Director Li, on the other hand, did not drink, and they knew it.
Before long, Li Baoshan returned with a box, containing 30-year-old Fenjiu specially provided in glass bottles, clearly aged for quite some time.
It was apparent that, to entertain Professor Tang, he had spared no expense.
Qin Xiaoyuan said with a beaming smile, “Professor Tang, this is Director Li’s treasure. I’ve wanted to try it for years but never had the chance—today seems like a lucky day!”
Tang Jinbo was in high spirits today, or rather excited!
It was as if he had returned to those towering years of the past.
Gradually, as the drinks and conversations flowed, the mood became livelier.
Tang Jinbo looked at Chen Cang and spoke slowly, “Back then, Wang Yushan, Chang Honglei, Gu Hongmei, and I—we all worked overtime day and night to create a new guide, performing over a dozen surgeries a day, continuously experimenting to create a standardized and effective tendon suturing method.”
“We met once a month, traveling by the green trains which took a full day. Wang Yushan and I were men, Chang Honglei and Gu Hongmei were women. We had to look after our female comrades. Every day we went to the capital, we would start discussing as soon as we arrived. I even got into a fight with Wang over this, ha ha… but now we’re all old!”
As he spoke, Tang Jinbo’s eyes filled with memories, reminiscing about their glorious era and those towering years.
“The four of us had four different philosophies, but only one goal—to create a handbook of hand surgery that would lead the world.”
At this point, Tang Jinbo took a deep breath, staring at Chen Cang, “Do you think we never considered the idea you have?”
“We devoted five years to this idea! Five whole years, we aimed to break down the various tendon suturing methods and rebuild them, creating a new suturing technique, but the project was too vast!”
“Back then, we didn’t know much about computers. Our handwritten drafts filled the rooms, all in the hopes of finding a better suturing method.”
“But in the end… we did not persist. As time went on, each of us became more set in our own ideas. I was starting to form a preliminary concept of the Tang method, while Wang stuck to his own path; only Chang Honglei and Gu Hongmei continued this kind of research.”
“So, our team disbanded unpleasantly, and the project was shelved.”
“Later on, the Tang method was developed. At that time, I was thirty-five years old.”
“Wang Yushan is a year older than me and became the director of the Department of Hand Surgery at the Sixth City Hospital, leading his team towards glory and the summit, turning it into one of the top orthopedic and hand surgery hospitals in the country!”
“Chang Honglei is the same age as me, and Gu Hongmei is two years younger than us. She followed Chang Honglei from Xiehe to Jishuitan, making Jishuitan’s hand surgery department a benchmark in the north.”
At this point, Tang Jinbo’s eyes blurred with tears.
Li Yu had never heard his teacher speak of these things and was unaware of these forgotten matters.
Tang Jinbo looked at Chen Cang, smiled, and said, “Seeing your work, to be honest, reminds me of us back then, how we fought side by side. But… you started at a much higher level than we did. Chen, I really hope you can do this well, that you can excel in tendon repair.”
“This… is the path we didn’t finish!”
Somehow, that sentence made Chen Cang, Jiang Tao, and Li Yu all feel a sudden sourness in their noses.
Chen Cang picked up his glass and said to Tang Jinbo, “Professor Tang, I toast to you!”
Jiang Tao and Li Yu quickly raised their glasses, “Professor Tang, we toast to you!”
Tang Jinbo gave a slight smile, “It is I who should toast to you!”
Drinking too much, Tang Jinbo got drunk.
On the way back to the hotel, he started crying, “Wang Yushan, you bastard, is it necessary to avoid my calls for so many years? Damn it… do you think if you don’t call me, I’ll call you?”
“Chang Honglei! You promised that we were going to…”
“Hongmei… the work we persevered in is now in the hands of a new generation!”
After helping Professor Tang back to the hotel, Chen Cang couldn’t shake his feelings for a long time.
Jiang Tao also had no idea that his teacher had experienced such a remarkable time.
Watching the sleeping Tang Jinbo lying in bed and still crying, Chen Cang suddenly felt something called responsibility and mission in his heart.
Professor Tang’s generation had laid a solid foundation for us.
Maybe, it’s our turn to carry the next big banner?
Thinking this, Chen Cang glanced at Jiang Tao, whose eyes were red from drinking too much.
When leaving the hotel, Li Yu stopped Chen Cang and said earnestly, “Professor Chen, I’m graduating next year, I… I want to follow you!”
Chen Cang was startled, “I’ll wait for you!”
Li Yu nodded, returned to the hotel suite, and for the first time, felt a deep pang of pity for his drunken, weeping teacher.
He silently swore to himself, “Teacher, the rest of the road, I will walk it for you!”
On the way back, Jiang Tao suddenly said, “Chen… Professor!”
Chen Cang was taken aback, “You’re calling me?”
Jiang Tao nodded, “Yes!”
Chen Cang smiled awkwardly, “It feels strange.”
But that didn’t matter, what he was called was unimportant.
Jiang Tao said, “I was wrong!”
Chen Cang smiled, perhaps… he knew what Jiang Tao was referring to.
