Chapter 1642: Chapter 1502: Independent City Hecheng
“It seems we should change our identities; it was too easy for Qu Feng and Chen Jing to notice us,” Si Yumi said to Chu Tianmang, starting the conversation.
Chu Tianmang was still pondering the recent events and didn’t respond. Though he had guessed the reason they were troubling Liu Binglan, many other details still puzzled him.
“Tian Lu, did you hear what I just said?” Si Yumi walked up to Chu Tianmang, somewhat irritated, and repeated what she had just said.
“Oh, change it, then. We can’t always attend meetings in our Dark Sect identities, especially now that I’m supposed to be dead,” Chu Tianmang replied absentmindedly.
Si Yumi snorted coldly, “What, starting to worry about her now?”
Chu Tianmang did not reply.
…
The next day, everyone continued on their journey early in the morning.
Yu Suo’s people left earlier than Liu Binglan’s, deliberately separating themselves to avoid giving rise to excessive speculation by certain individuals.
Yu Suo knew that many forces were targeting the rising New Moon Land, and now, if she appeared too close to them, her Guangyue Palace would also be listed among the enemies by some interested parties.
Instead of openly declaring an alliance with New Moon Land, it was better to maintain neutrality and continue to observe the origin of the whole affair from the shadows, so on the last part of the journey to Liangkun Mountain, she chose to travel separately from the people of New Moon Land.
When Chen Jing and Qu Feng learned that the people of Guangyue Palace were not continuing to travel with them, smiles appeared on their faces. Now that they also had the help of the Dark Sect, completing this task would be much easier.
“Once we leave Fine Water City, we’ll make our move, no need to drag it out for too long,” said Qu Feng to Chen Jing.
“Yeah, those from the Dark Sect are ready, they always do things cleanly and efficiently,” Chen Jing seemed to have frequent dealings with the Dark Sect and was quite confident in their ability to carry out kidnappings.
“It seems like a group is approaching them,” Chen Jing said from a high vantage point, noticing from afar the people of New Moon Land meeting up with another group at the city gates.
“What’s going on?” Qu Feng’s brow furrowed.
They had always been waiting for New Moon Land to be isolated before making a move. The Guangyue Palace group had just left, only for another group to join them!
“Send someone to check which faction those people belong to, if they are insignificant, we’ll give them a warning to be smart about it,” instructed Qu Feng.
Chen Jing nodded and immediately sent someone to investigate the background of those traveling with New Moon Land.
It didn’t take long for Chen Jing to return with a grim expression.
“It’s people from Hecheng!” said Chen Jing.
“Hecheng? Why would they be walking together with New Moon Land? Don’t they know that allying with New Moon Land now means making a bunch of enemies for themselves!” Qu Feng said irritably.
They had thought that this would be an easy task to complete, as the rise of New Moon Land, no matter how rapid, couldn’t possibly resist an attack from two imperial experts like them.
Who would have expected things to complicate again and again, whether it was Guangyue Palace or Hecheng…
“If it’s Hecheng, it would be inconvenient for us to take action,” Si Yumi said indifferently to Qu Feng.
“Why’s that?” Qu Feng’s expression shifted slightly.
“You and I are not ordinary mortals. Humble City and Hecheng have always been stubborn families that we major powers would rather not provoke. We would even more willingly offend the Imperial Clan than have any unpleasantness with them. If we act this time, we will surely alert the people of Hecheng, and if you, as members of the Imperial Clan, are willing to take responsibility, then I would gladly act. But if it’s up to our Dark Sect to take on that burden, I’m afraid I can only bow out,” said Si Yumi.
“This…” Qu Feng and Chen Jing, indeed from the Imperial Clan, could not represent the whole clan, and they really dared not provoke the people from Hecheng.
“Find a way to separate Hecheng’s people from New Moon Land’s and then come talk to us. We have other matters, we’ll be going first,” Si Yumi said with a faint smile.
After she finished speaking, she began to chant a spell and summoned a Winged Soul Pet, flying into the sky.
Her followers promptly followed suit, and in an instant, all Dark Sect members had dispersed, leaving Chen Jing and Qu Feng behind with sullen faces.
…
Hecheng, like Humble City, is a highly esteemed independent city in Struggle Land, practically on the same level as the Eighth-level Border and Ninth-level Border.
These independent cities and Humble City are controlled by a very young group of people, but behind these young Soul Pet Masters, there is a group of old but powerful creatures supporting them.
Though they may not have as many members as the Divine Sect, Elemental Sect, Monster Beast Palace, and other major powers that practically dominate every city in the human domain, their influence in certain regions can surpass those of the more established forces.
Liu Binglan was only familiar with Hecheng by hearsay, having hardly dealt with the elusive people of Hecheng defying the Divine Dragon for all those years. Unexpectedly, as soon as they left Fine Water City, the people from Hecheng friendly engaged with them, willing to travel together to Liangkun Mountain.
New Moon Land was in an awkward position and in need of allies, and naturally, Liu Binglan was happy to proceed in company with Hecheng’s people.
Hecheng was also on the invitee list for the Liangkun Conference, and attending the conference this time on behalf of the city was Vice City Master Lin Xian, accompanied by roughly ten others.
Lin Xian seemed relatively young, but from the look in his eyes and the composure of his speech, he was likely not of the younger generation.
Lin Xian didn’t talk much, merely having a short conversation with Liu Binglan.
Liu Binglan herself wasn’t much of a talker either; instead, it was the young people she brought from New Moon Land and the youths of Hecheng who hit it off, quickly becoming familiar with one another.
…
In the distant mountains, a deep blue eagle lion soared over the mountain ranges, rapidly approaching an apparently modest and holy flying group.
Gao He, riding a Winged Soul Pet, looked back and discovered the person catching up was his nephew Gao He. He smiled faintly and whispered something in Yu Suo’s ear.
After flying past the Guangyue Palace Guards, Gao He did a salute and said, “Lady Liu and the others encountered people from Hecheng when they left Fine Water City and are now traveling together with them.”
“Hecheng?” Lady Gao paused, looking somewhat puzzled.
Yu Suo also felt unsure. She didn’t understand why people from Hecheng would be traveling together with those from New Moon Land.
The current situation of New Moon Land was not too optimistic. They were always somewhat “respected but shunned” by other forces. Anyone a bit smarter could guess that New Moon Land was currently being isolated by a joint effort of major powers. In such a scenario, whoever got too close to New Moon Land would undoubtedly bring unnecessary trouble upon themselves.
And for the people of Hecheng to be joining New Moon Land at this time was tantamount to telling those powers that they intended to make friends with New Moon Land. Surely Hecheng didn’t need to put itself in a position to be coldly regarded by many forces at this time, did it?
“Who are the people from Hecheng?” inquired Yu Suo.
“Vice City Master Lin Xian,” stated Gao He.
“Lady Yu, we have already made some breakthroughs around Humble City, but Hecheng has not given us any chance to extend a hand. If the people of Hecheng are truly willing to befriend New Moon Land this time, then through this subtle bridge, could we approach those within Hecheng?” Lady Gao proposed.
Yu Suo shook her head and said, “No need. Although Lin Xian is known by reputation, not many have truly seen him in person.”
“Lady Liu has asked me to inquire with the Saintess about what she thinks of Lin Xian’s sudden gesture of goodwill.”
Liu Binglan was also intelligent; she knew there would be no unprovoked olive branches in this world. Aware that Yu Suo would have a deeper understanding of these delicate inter-factional relationships, Liu Binglan had Gao He ask for her perspective.
Yu Suo did not answer but pinched a blood-colored rose in her hand.
She tossed the blood-colored rose into the air, and as the petals flew high into the sky, they immediately melted into the air, disappearing petal by petal as if dissolving.
Gao He didn’t quite understand but dared not ask further; he could only follow Yu Suo as they continued forward.
After a while, a swift black shadow streaked through the cloud layer, appearing in front of Yu Suo even before the Guangyue Palace Guards fully realized what was happening.
This was a Soul Pet Master of incredible speed. Gao He couldn’t tell whether they were male or female because even the hair was concealed under a black dress and hooded cloak, making it difficult to discern whether the figure was the lean build of a man or the slender shape of a woman.
The person performed a salutation before Yu Suo and whispered a few words.
“Hmm, go back,” Yu Suo nodded in acknowledgment.
A faint smile appeared on her face as she mused to herself, “So it’s him, quite interesting.”
Without another word, the person turned and left, quickly vanishing into the clouds, uncertain where they flew off to.
“Tell Lady Liu that she can get a bit closer to Lin Xian. He is someone completely trustworthy,” Yu Suo appeared to have gleaned something, her words carrying innuendo and a touch of ambiguity.
Gao He didn’t quite understand but figured he’d just relay the message from Lady Yu to Lady Liu as is.
…
Before long, Gao He conveyed the message back to Liu Binglan.
Liu Binglan looked at Gao He in confusion and asked, “Are you sure those were her exact words?”
“Yes,” Gao He nodded earnestly.
Liu Binglan glanced at Lin Xian, who was walking at the front, and her confusion deepened.
Yu Suo’s way of speaking was strange; why use the word “close”? Furthermore, a trustworthy person was enough to suggest that Hecheng’s friendly overtures were not harboring ulterior motives. Then why did Yu Suo state “completely trustworthy”? The presence or absence of “completely” seemed to change the meaning considerably. Lin Xian of Hecheng wasn’t one of their own; how could Liu Binglan possibly fully trust a person she had only just met?
