Chapter 1696: Chapter 1553: Attack on World City

“I’ll take your Monument Tears.” A demonic voice echoed in Qin Guang’s ears.

Qin Guang froze in place. The demon man was clearly still in front of him—how could the voice be coming from behind him?

Gradually, the shadowy figure before him dissolved like a wisp of smoke, leaving nothing in front of him. But the chilling presence behind him grew stronger, inching closer toward his back.

Qin Guang immediately commanded his Soul Pet to dodge.

The Light Beast beneath him turned into a streak of light, bolting far away in an instant. Qin Guang glanced back and saw the demon man had not pursued him. Only then did he let out a brief sigh of relief.

With high-level immortal strength, there was no way Qin Guang could be a match for him. Naturally, he wasn’t about to gamble his life. The most urgent matter now was to escape from here.

Chu Mu stood on the spot. His claw, engulfed in Demon Flame, slowly retracted, gripping something dripping with fresh blood in his palm.

From afar, Chu Mu watched as Qin Guang fled in terror, a wicked smile curling at his lips: “Aren’t you forgetting something?”

With that, Chu Mu slowly opened his palm. Within it was a heart, still beating, its crimson lifeblood dripping relentlessly!!

The heart looked disturbingly alive!!

Qin Guang froze, hurriedly pressing his hands against his chest…

Blood seeped through the fabric of his robes, growing faster and faster until it surged out in a fountain-like spray.

“BOOM!!!!!”

Chu Mu’s fingers tightened into a fist, crushing Qin Guang’s heart into fragments. Blood burst from the shattered organ, splattering in every direction, a vivid, harrowing red!

Qin Guang stood motionless, frozen in place. The blood gushed uncontrollably from his chest, unstoppable.

With his heart obliterated, there was no chance for him to survive.

Even in death, his face remained contorted with pain, disbelief, and a profound, unresolved confusion.

The gruesome scene played out before the eyes of the other Divine Sect officers, sending a deadly chill coursing through their veins!

Qin Guang had been the strongest among them—if he could be so brutally and effortlessly killed, what hope did the rest of them have?

Escape seemed futile. All that awaited them was becoming the next lives harvested by this devil before them.

In the face of a high-level immortal, quasi-immortals and low-level immortals were as feeble as paper. This absolute dominance over life and death only exacerbated the frenzy within Chu Mu, swelling his bloodthirsty aura.

None of the three remaining Divine Sect officers were spared. All were incinerated into dust by Chu Mu’s Demon Flame.

The surviving members of the New Moon Land who witnessed the slaughter were utterly unable to put their shock into words.

After killing the final immortal-level officer, Chu Mu flew toward them. The terrifying storm of rage and malevolence emanating from him made their souls tremble uncontrollably, as if they, too, might be reduced to ash by the Demon Flame at any moment.

“He can now rest in peace.” Chu Mu landed before Ye Wansheng, his gaze falling on the fallen Cloud Gate Elder.

Ye Wansheng, snapping out of his earlier terror, looked at the desolate figure of the elder on the ground and felt an ache deep in his heart.

Orphans, both he and Qingzi had been brought up by Ying Rong. Ying Rong was not only their teacher but also like a father—strict yet compassionate.

Ying Rong’s early death planted a deep sorrow in Ye Wansheng’s heart long ago.

When the Cloud Gate Elder sought to take him as a disciple, Ye Wansheng had initially been reluctant. But over the years, his respect and admiration for the kind and attentive elder grew, despite the fact he often acted as though he didn’t care for him.

The Cloud Gate Elder had many disciples. Ye Wansheng never understood why the old man insisted on entrusting something seemingly so important to someone like him—lazy, indifferent, and ungrateful for the rare resources he was given for cultivation.

Chu Mu patted Ye Wansheng on the shoulder without saying anything further.

Given Ye Wansheng’s strength, he could have escaped when the city fell. A sacrificial defense served no purpose; he had already done his best.

Lost territory can be reclaimed. But lives, once gone, could never be recovered.

For the Cloud Gate Elder to choose death in battle, perhaps it was because deep down, he refused to let old age claim him.

He had safeguarded Cloud Gate for centuries, yet few in the New Moon Land even remembered him. Chu Mu didn’t know what drove this solitary guardian, but there was surely a reason for his steadfast duty. That reason was not for Chu Mu to question; finding the answer, understanding its depth, was now Ye Wansheng’s burden alone.

“What about the East Madness Forest Fortress?” Ye Wansheng set aside his sorrow. There was no time for regret now.

“The Alliance Retaliation has retreated. I’d call it a resounding victory,” Chu Mu said.

With nearly half the enemy forces eliminated, the East Madness Forest Battlefield was essentially stabilized.

“Good. As expected, you’re more capable than I am.” Ye Wansheng let out a self-mocking laugh.

“How many of us are still alive?” Chu Mu asked.

Glancing back at the dozen or so injured generals behind him, Ye Wansheng replied flatly, “Just us, I think.”

The strength of the Divine Sect Punishment Hall members had far exceeded their expectations. They had been on the back foot from the very beginning.

Now, aside from the group under Qin Guang, more than half of the Punishment Hall’s dominator-level forces had already entered the New Moon Land’s territory.

“You all should return to Wanxiang City,” Chu Mu said, addressing the group.

Ye Wansheng shook his head. “We still have fighting strength; it was the others who sacrificed themselves.”

Chu Mu’s gaze swept across the wounded generals behind Ye Wansheng. Though battered, their eyes still burned with determination.

They were unwilling—unwilling to leave as injured soldiers, unwilling to abandon the battlefield!

“Several forces have entered the northern region of our New Moon Land. Return to Wanxiang City and dispatch people to guard the key cities up north,” Chu Mu ordered.

“Hmph, we already lost once. We won’t allow it to happen again!” Teng Lang said through gritted teeth.

“My nightmare demon subordinates will follow you.”

With Cloud Gate completely fallen, Chu Mu himself couldn’t remain to guard these ruins and fend off the endless intruders pouring into the New Moon Land. The priority now was securing the northern cities.

However, most of the New Moon Land’s forces were stationed in various fortresses. The major cities at the edge of the sky would undoubtedly suffer heavy losses.

Chu Mu did not linger long at the Heavenly Mountain Fortress. It was the farthest region of the New Moon Land, and if something happened elsewhere, he would be forced into a grueling long-distance rush to provide aid.

Instead of returning to the East Madness Forest Fortress, Chu Mu left Zhan Ye, Ye, and the Little Hiding Dragon stationed there. With their power, handling the heavily injured sect leader-level enemies shouldn’t pose too much of a challenge.

He flew straight back to Wanxiang City, the true heart of the New Moon Land. The city had minimal forces left to defend it, and Chu Mu was deeply concerned that someone might bypass the fortresses and strike directly at Wanxiang City, the main capital.

Upon his arrival, Wanxiang City felt far more desolate than before. Typically, the streets buzzed with Soul Pet Masters coming and going, while the sky was patrolled by the ever-present Misty Immortal Bird Army, a holy cloud guarding from above.

Now, all of Wanxiang City’s protective forces had been reassigned to the fortresses. The city lay quiet under a heavy atmosphere of suppression, bleakness, and tense urgency.

The warm sun hung high in the sky, its afternoon rays dappling the wilderness and gracing the insignificant wildflowers scattered across the plains.

At the edge of the horizon, a long column of soldiers clad in dark blue armor marched swiftly toward World City.

Nearly all of World City’s forces had been sent to White Nightmare Demon City, the East Madness Forest Fortress, and Wind and Rain City. What remained in the city were only ordinary civilians and a scant few Soul Pet Masters and city guards.

World City was not a strategic focus of this war. Situated in New Moon Land’s central region, it seemed unlikely to come under attack. Consequently, the city’s defenses were far weaker than usual.

This frailty delighted the dark blue-armored troops. It seemed their Deputy Chief had made a sound strategic decision, predicting New Moon Land’s hinterland would be poorly defended. They had infiltrated the land via the nearly unguarded North Sea and advanced toward World City through the Forbidden Domain without difficulty.

“Su Bu, World City has almost no guards. Should we seize it directly or wait and observe for a while?” reported the female navy officer, Hui.

“Go straight in,” Su Bu ordered.

The blue-clad army marched forward unabated, advancing down the wilderness road toward World City’s gates.

World City’s ancient defensive walls, remnants of the Border City era, were utterly ineffective against dominator and emperor-level forces.

The Wupan First Navy Division broke the gates with ease, storming down World City’s main street to capture the City Lord Mansion.

“Halt!!”

Suddenly, Su Bu raised a hand, commanding all naval soldiers to stop their advance.

“Commander, why stop? These city guards are no match for us,” asked the military advisor, puzzled.

Su Bu didn’t respond. His gaze fixed on a colossal golden sculpture standing proudly on the main street.

“Su Bu, what’s wrong?” the female navy officer asked, perplexed.

“Is this their king?” Su Bu pointed toward the sculpture and spoke.

The female officer looked up. A vague sense of familiarity washed over her as she studied the figure depicted in the statue…

Suddenly, the memory hit her. This sculpture depicted the very man who had once single-handedly battled the Seven Skull Sea Serpent King in the Sea of Exile!

“It’s… it’s him!!!” The female officer’s face filled with astonishment.

Su Bu’s expression grew solemn. Staring at the towering statue, he remembered the scene of that lone man’s epic battle against the Seven Skull Sea Serpent King. For a moment, he lacked the courage to take another step into World City.
